Circus-Time!

23rd July 2008

Circus & Spectacle  - at Somerset College

NoFitState Circus have, once again, wowed audiences in Taunton with their own blend of street theatre meets acrobatic mayhem in new production, Tabu, showing at Somerset College until 26th July.

My second outing to this radical circus was nonetheless breathtaking. In a show that left me wanting at least another half-an-hour (you find reality with a bump after watching the all-senses assault) of the fantasy world, this really is one show where you just don’t know what’s coming next. And it’s all thought-provoking.  A promenade show (so take it easy of you have difficulty standing after a while) this show makes use of acrobatics, video, live music, comedy acting, tableau and much more.

Tabu works on (typically) many levels. And that’s not just in acrobatic terms. A work of serious theatre about perceptions – and worries - in our own world, and a show which works because of the small details (the cheeky child; the amorous man; the sensual woman) which happen all around you in the Big Top – but also a show which grabs you by the eyes and ears and really gets you thinking.

So – as ever it’s hats off to the incredible creativity and energy of NoFitState – and a hearty three cheers for the Brewhouse in again securing their tour to Taunton. If you thought circus was dead – then you REALLY need to get in to NoFitState.  Only a few days left on this run – so run!
